Roselle, also known as red hibiscus or by its Vietnamese name “Atisô Đỏ,” belongs to the mallow family (Malvaceae). Scientifically named Hibiscus sabdariffa, this vibrant red flowering plant originates from West Africa. They typically grows to a height of 1.5 to 2 meters. Despite the similar name, roselle is not related to the green artichoke, which belongs to the thistle family (Asteraceae). Vietnamese farmers first introduced roselle in the 1970s and now grow it in several provinces—such as Hanoi, Hai Duong, and Hung Yen—for its valuable medicinal flowers.
